The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MCI), through the Directorate of Quality Control and Consumer Protection (DCQPC), organized this Friday, January 30, 2026, at the Montana Hotel, a meeting on the public presentation of the results of the study on the quality of drinking water in the Metropolitan Region of Port-au-Prince and its surroundings.

Aware of this cause, Minister James Monazard, in his speech on the occasion, framed this approach in respect of the fundamental right to drinking water, recognized by United Nations Resolution 64/292 and guaranteed by the framework law of March 11, 2009, on drinking water and sanitation, as well as by the regulatory notices published in 2024.
“Water, the source of life, cannot be considered a mere commodity, but constitutes a pillar of human dignity, public health, and development,” he stated, while expressing his desire to increase efforts for the benefit of consumers.

The study, conducted by the DCQPC between August 2025 and January 2026, reveals alarming findings. According to the report, more than 92% of the water sachets analyzed do not meet standards, with failures to comply with registration and labeling requirements, thus depriving citizens of their fundamental right to information, according to DCQPC Assistant Director Papyto Vilvert.

Minister Monazard, recalling that water is a fundamental right and a condition of human dignity, emphasized in his address the crucial role of the private sector in strictly adhering to existing standards. He stated that, given this reality, the State, under the leadership of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, will implement an immediate and inter-institutional action plan to strengthen regulations, intensify controls, and guarantee safe access to drinking water, in accordance with the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 6.

The feedback session organized by the MCI is intended as a starting point-a space for consultation, exchange, and collective action, calling for accountability among operators and raising consumer awareness to better understand the current crisis. It aims to collaboratively pave the way for concrete, sustainable, and structuring solutions that serve the health, well-being, and dignity of the Haitian people.
